A Bengaluru content creator’s candid account of apartment hunting has gone viral, drawing attention to the city’s rising rental costs and the emotional stress many tenants face while relocating.
Rajeshwari Gupta shared on Instagram that she has only 20 days left to vacate her current home and is struggling to find an affordable flat in HSR Layout.
₹15,000 budget meets harsh reality
Gupta said she was searching for a basic one-bedroom apartment close to her gym with a budget of ₹15,000.
However, she claimed rents for 1BHK homes in HSR Layout now typically start around ₹25,000 and can go up to ₹50,000 for furnished units.
She also criticised high security deposits, saying they feel more like investments than refundable advances.
Brokers disappoint, solo search begins
Frustrated by property brokers, Gupta said she decided to search on her own after repeated assurances of “reasonable” prices did not match her budget.
She described travelling around the locality on her scooter in the summer heat, comparing the experience to an unexpected marathon.
Basic needs, difficult search
The creator said her expectations were simple — sunlight, ventilation and affordability.
Yet she described house hunting in Bengaluru as a “full-time job with emotional damage”, asking how others manage the city’s housing costs.
She later appealed online for leads on a well-lit 1BHK within a flexible budget of ₹14,000 to ₹20,000.
Internet reacts strongly
Her video sparked mixed reactions online.
Many users empathised, calling HSR rents shocking and questioning steep deposits.
Others suggested nearby areas such as Marathahalli or locations close to metro lines for better affordability.
Some viewers, however, questioned whether the reel was also aimed at gaining attention online.
Bigger Bengaluru housing debate
The viral post has become part of a wider conversation on affordability, quality of living and the pressure of renting in one of India’s fastest-growing cities
