Football fans in Bengaluru can enjoy late-night FIFA World Cup matches without worrying about food service, as the Karnataka government has extended operating hours for hotels and restaurants on key match days.
Chief Minister D K Shivakumar announced that hotels and restaurants in Bengaluru will be allowed to serve food until 3.30 am, instead of the usual 1.00 am, on July 14, 15 and 19 to facilitate screenings of the FIFA World Cup semi-finals and final. The decision was taken following a request from the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI).
Extended timings for football fans
The temporary relaxation allows eateries, restaurants and hotels within the Bengaluru City Police Commissionerate limits to remain open for an additional two-and-a-half hours during the tournament’s biggest matches.
The extension covers the two semi-finals and the final, enabling fans to watch the late-night fixtures while continuing to access food and hospitality services.
Government stresses responsible celebrations
Announcing the decision, Shivakumar said football inspires millions across the world and the FIFA World Cup is a celebration eagerly awaited by fans. He added that while extending food service hours, the government would continue to prioritise public safety, law and order, and the convenience of citizens.
The Chief Minister also urged football enthusiasts to celebrate responsibly and cooperate with the authorities during the extended operating hours.
Boost for hospitality sector
The move is expected to benefit Bengaluru’s hospitality industry, with restaurants, pubs and hotels anticipating higher footfall as supporters gather to watch the high-profile matches.
Industry bodies had sought the extension to accommodate football fans, as the World Cup fixtures are being played late at night in India due to time zone differences. The temporary relaxation is expected to create a lively atmosphere across the city while offering businesses an opportunity to serve customers beyond normal operating hours.
