Bengaluru police on Saturday arrested a 43-year-old woman, identified as Uma alias Salma, for allegedly stealing ₹67 lakh in cash and valuables worth ₹70 lakh from her employer’s residence in Chamarajpet, West Bengaluru.

Uma, a native of Chamarajanagar, had been hired two months ago to care for Sujatha, a bedridden woman. According to a police complaint filed by Radha, Sujatha’s 72-year-old sister, the family had recently sold a property near Electronics City and stored the proceeds in a locker at home.

Police said Uma had become aware of the large sum stored at the house. She allegedly took advantage of a day when fewer family members were present and made off with the cash and valuables. The theft came to light when the family opened the locker while planning to purchase a new flat in Chamarajpet.

When confronted, Uma denied any wrongdoing. However, under interrogation, she confessed to the theft and reportedly returned ₹57 lakh in cash along with the stolen valuables.

She has been booked under Section 306 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to theft by a servant from their employer.
