Amid a severe shortage of commercial and domestic LPG cylinders across the state, authorities have assured continued fuel supply to ensure the smooth functioning of Indira Canteens in Bengaluru.
Officials from the Food and Civil Supplies Department have informed the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) that LPG cylinders will be provided to operate the 178 Indira Canteens spread across the city. The assurance comes at a crucial time as concerns had emerged that the canteens could soon run out of fuel.
Authorities step in to ensure uninterrupted food services
Agencies REWARDS and Chef Talks, which manage food services at the Indira Canteens, said that the GBA Chief Health Officer (CHO) has assured them that LPG stocks will be supplied shortly.
A source in the GBA revealed that a meeting was recently held between the GBA Chief Commissioner and the Food and Civil Supplies Commissioner. During the meeting, it was decided that the department would ensure the supply of LPG cylinders to centralised kitchens that prepare food for the Indira Canteens.
Confirming the development, Sirajuddin Madani, Chief Health Officer of the GBA, said the assurance was received on Thursday evening.
“Top officials of the Food Department have informed us that LPG cylinders will be supplied to GBA so that the public canteens can function smoothly,” Madani said.
However, he noted that it is still unclear whether the supply will be continuous or provided in phases depending on availability.
Menu to remain unchanged despite fuel concerns
Despite the ongoing LPG shortage, officials have clarified that the situation remains under control and that the menu at Indira Canteens will remain unchanged for now.
Some reports suggested that firewood was being used for cooking in certain areas due to the shortage. However, officials clarified that such practices may occur in rural areas where space permits.
“In the city, using firewood to cook food is not practical due to space constraints,” an official explained.
The Indira Canteens play a crucial role in providing affordable meals to thousands of daily wage workers, students, and economically weaker sections in Bengaluru. Authorities are therefore prioritising fuel supply to ensure uninterrupted food services.
