Bengaluru: The Kempegowda International Airport’s (KIA) second terminal is likely to inaugurated sometime in the following month. On November 10, the State Government has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate T2. However, sources said that a formal confirmation from the PMO is still awaited.
At KIA, the new terminal is being constructed in two phases. T2’s first phase will be officially opened first. BIAL claims that when completed, the 255,000 sqft Phase 1 of T2 will augment the airport’s capacity by 25 million passengers annually (MPPA). There will be 20 MPPA added with the construction of Terminal 2’s second phase, which is currently in the planning stages. Once both terminals are operating, their combined capacity will be 70 MPPA.
T2 is being built as an integrated terminal to handle both domestic and international passengers. For the following decade, a third terminal will also be built.
T2’s construction began in 2018, and Phase 1 was scheduled to open on March 31, 2021. However, development was delayed due to the pandemic.
