Bengaluru: Cricket fans in Bengaluru may be in for a major treat, as the city is likely to host the opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) president Venkatesh Prasad has confirmed that discussions are underway with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding Bengaluru hosting the season opener of the world’s biggest T20 league.
Speaking to media persons in Mysuru on Tuesday, Prasad said that preliminary talks with the BCCI have already taken place and that the proposal is currently under discussion at the board level. The IPL 2026 season is scheduled to be held between March 26 and May 31.
“I’ve already held discussions with the BCCI about hosting the opening match in Bengaluru. The BCCI is also discussing the issue internally,” Prasad said.
Tradition and uncertainty after celebrations
Traditionally, the IPL opening match is hosted at the home ground of the team that won the championship in the previous season. However, Prasad pointed out that certain developments following Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) title celebrations earlier this year have created confusion around the venue selection.
“Every year, the opening match takes place at the home venue of the defending champions. But there was some confusion and uncertainty due to the stampede incident during RCB’s IPL championship celebrations on June 4,” he explained.
The stampede, which occurred during large-scale public celebrations in Bengaluru, raised questions about crowd management and security preparedness for major sporting events. Since then, authorities have been cautious while assessing the city’s readiness to host high-profile matches with massive public turnout.
State government support for IPL in Bengaluru
Prasad, who was recently elected as KSCA president, said that his administration has moved quickly to address these concerns. He confirmed that discussions have already been held with the Karnataka government to ensure that all safety, security and logistical arrangements are in place.
“Since our team won the KSCA election, we have already held discussions with the state government. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar have given the green signal to host the IPL tournament in Bengaluru,” he said.
He added that Home Minister G Parameshwara has also been consulted. “I’ve spoken to the Home Minister over the phone. We are confident that with coordinated efforts, Bengaluru can safely host the opening match and the rest of the IPL fixtures,” Prasad noted.
Bengaluru’s importance in Indian cricket
Bengaluru has long been one of India’s premier cricketing centres. The M Chinnaswamy Stadium, located in the heart of the city, is known for its electrifying atmosphere, high-scoring games and passionate fan base. It has regularly hosted IPL matches, international fixtures and domestic tournaments.
According to Prasad, the city is set to witness a packed cricketing calendar in the coming months. “Besides the IPL, all formats of cricket, including international matches, will be held in Bengaluru soon,” he said.
He also highlighted the availability of infrastructure in the city. “There are three stadiums in Bengaluru. Talks are also underway for the construction of an international-standard cricket stadium in Mysuru,” Prasad added, indicating KSCA’s long-term vision to decentralise cricket infrastructure across Karnataka.
Virat Kohli to return to Bengaluru
Adding to the excitement for local fans, Prasad confirmed that star India batter Virat Kohli will be in Bengaluru later this month. Kohli is set to represent Delhi in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, India’s premier domestic one-day tournament.
“Virat Kohli will be in Bengaluru on December 24. Delhi is scheduled to play Andhra in a group-stage match,” Prasad said.
Kohli’s presence is expected to draw large crowds, reflecting his enduring popularity among cricket fans in Karnataka and across the country.
IPL opening match buzz grows
If confirmed, hosting the IPL opening match would once again put Bengaluru in the national and international spotlight. The opening fixture typically features a grand opening ceremony, cultural performances and the first match of the season, watched by millions across the world.
For fans of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the possibility of witnessing the season opener at home adds another layer of excitement, especially after the team’s long-awaited championship victory.
Conclusion
While the final decision rests with the BCCI, the strong backing from the Karnataka government and proactive efforts by the KSCA have significantly strengthened Bengaluru’s case to host the IPL 2026 opening match. With world-class infrastructure, passionate fans and renewed focus on safety and organisation, the city appears well-positioned to kick off another thrilling season of the IPL.
