Bengaluru: In a big boost to the ruling BJP which is under fire for the last few months over charges of corruption, internal tussle etc, the party was able to win over 50 per cent of the seats in the by-election for various urban bodies.
The party has won 27 seats out of 51 followed by Congress which has won 15 seats. The miserable show of JD (S) continued with the party winning just 2 seats.
In Kollegal CMC, BJP won six out of seven seats which were earlier won by BSP. Election necessitated following the disqualification of seven members who followed local MLA Mahesh from BSP to BJP. Congress won one seat. This comes as a morale booster for Mahesh, who jumped from BSP to BJP and facing criticism.
BJP also won the Vijayapura City corporation for the first time. Out of 35 seats, the party won 17 seats followed by Congress which won 10 seats. All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen won two seats while JD (S) won just one seat. Independents won in five wards.
BJP went for election under the leadership of a local MLA Basangouda Ramangouda Patil Yatnal, a staunch critic of BSY and the Nirani family. The results come as a shot in the arm for him.
