Bengaluru: A 31-year-old man was allegedly attacked by two burglars after returning home from a late-night movie outing and finding the house ransacked in Katamnallur on September 26.
P. Jagadish, who lives in Maruthi Layout in Katamnallur and works in the finance department of a private hospital in Hoskote, returned home around 1.30am and found the front door ajar. According to his police complaint, two intruders were still inside the house.
When Jagadish confronted them, one of the men allegedly hit him on the head with an iron rod. The two suspects then fled on a motorcycle after Jagadish ran outside and sought help from neighbours.
Family had travelled to Andhra Pradesh
According to the complaint, Jagadish’s family had travelled to Andhra Pradesh on September 25, while he stayed back in Bengaluru.
After returning from work on September 26, Jagadish locked his house at around 10.15pm and left with friends for a movie.
When he returned approximately three hours later, he noticed that the main door was open. He then discovered that the house had been searched and valuables were missing.
The two suspected burglars were allegedly still inside when Jagadish arrived, turning the theft into a confrontation.
Intruders allegedly attacked homeowner
Jagadish told police that one of the suspects was tall and thin and was wearing a helmet. The second person was of average height and had covered his face with a mask.
He estimated that the two suspects were between 25 and 30 years old.
When Jagadish confronted the men, the masked suspect allegedly struck him on the head with an iron rod. The suspects reportedly attempted to attack him again, prompting Jagadish to run out of the house.
He raised an alarm and sought assistance from neighbours. The two men then fled from the area on a motorcycle.
Jagadish sustained a deep injury to his head and informed his friends about the incident. He was subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment and has since been discharged, according to the report.
Gold and silver ornaments stolen
After the suspects fled, Jagadish checked the house and found several ornaments missing from a cupboard.
The stolen gold jewellery reportedly included a pair of earrings, a chain and six finger rings. The burglars also allegedly took silver ornaments, including two waist belts, a pair of bangles and three pairs of anklets.
The stolen gold weighed around 20 grams, while the silver ornaments weighed approximately 45 grams, according to the police complaint.
The total value of the stolen property has not been separately specified in the report.
Police are investigating the burglary and assault and are working to identify the two suspects.
Suspects fled on motorcycle
The suspects reportedly escaped on a motorcycle after Jagadish ran out of the house.
Their faces were partly concealed, according to the complaint, which could make identification more difficult.
Police are expected to examine available CCTV footage from the surrounding area and gather other evidence as part of the investigation.
The timing of the incident is also significant. The suspects appear to have entered the house while Jagadish was away at the cinema, but they remained inside when he returned.
The investigation will establish how the accused gained entry into the property and whether they had monitored the house before breaking in.
Police investigation underway
A complaint has been filed in connection with the burglary and assault.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the identity and movements of the two suspects.
The exact manner in which the burglars entered the house has not been established in the initial report.
Investigators may examine CCTV footage from nearby roads and properties, along with other available evidence, to trace the motorcycle used by the suspects.
The stolen jewellery will also form part of the investigation as police work to identify the accused and recover the property.
Incident highlights home security concerns
The incident has also highlighted the risks homeowners can face when burglars enter occupied houses.
In this case, the burglary allegedly occurred while Jagadish was away for a few hours. The suspects were still inside when he returned, leading to a physical confrontation.
Recent burglary and theft cases in Bengaluru have similarly highlighted the importance of security measures, including CCTV surveillance and proper verification of people entering residential premises.
Police have also been advising residents to remain cautious and immediately alert neighbours or the police if they notice suspicious activity around their homes.
Investigation to establish suspects’ identities
The two suspects remain unidentified in the initial report.
Their descriptions provided in the complaint — including the helmet worn by one suspect and the mask used by the other — could assist investigators in examining CCTV footage.
Police will also investigate whether the motorcycle used by the suspects can be traced through surveillance footage or other evidence.
The case is being investigated based on the complaint filed by Jagadish, and further details are expected as investigators establish the sequence of events and identify those responsible.
