A police team led by Kundapur Subdivision DSP H.D. Kulkarni has arrested a 45-year-old man for allegedly posting an objectionable comment on Facebook related to an interview with a vegetable vendor from Mangaluru’s Central Market.
The accused, identified as Prakash S from Bengaluru, was produced before the jurisdictional court after his arrest.
Suo motu case registered
According to police, the incident dates back to March 4 last year. While monitoring social media, officers noticed that a post on the Facebook page of a vernacular daily, featuring an interview with Mahammad, a vegetable vendor at Central Market, had received an abusive comment.
The comment was allegedly posted from a Facebook account under the name “Hemmeya Karyakarta.”
Taking cognisance of the matter, Kundapur police registered a suo motu case under Section 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (statements conducing to public mischief) and Section 66(C) of the Information Technology Act.
Action against online abuse
Police stated that objectionable content capable of disturbing communal harmony or public order will be dealt with strictly under the law.
Further investigation into the case is under way.
