Bengaluru: A 50-year-old businessman from Bengaluru has allegedly lost ₹4.59 lakh in an online fraud after cybercriminals posing as marble traders from Rajasthan convinced him to invest in what appeared to be a profitable business deal.

According to police, the victim came across the offer online and was persuaded by the fraudsters, who claimed to be genuine marble dealers supplying high-quality marble at attractive prices. Believing the proposal to be legitimate, he transferred ₹4.59 lakh to the accused as part of the transaction.

Fraud uncovered after payment

After receiving the money, the accused allegedly stopped responding to the victim’s calls and messages, and the promised marble was never delivered. Realising he had been cheated, the businessman approached the police and lodged a complaint.

Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to identify and trace the fraudsters involved in the online scam. Authorities are examining the bank accounts and digital trail used in the transaction.

Police urge caution in online business deals

The incident has once again highlighted the growing number of online business frauds targeting traders and entrepreneurs.

Police have advised the public to verify the authenticity of sellers and businesses before making advance payments, particularly in high-value transactions involving construction materials and other commercial goods. They have also urged buyers to insist on proper documentation and verify company credentials through official channels before transferring money.

Cybercrime experts recommend conducting background checks, avoiding advance payments to unknown vendors, and reporting suspicious online transactions immediately to law enforcement agencies.

The case serves as another reminder that fraudsters are increasingly exploiting online marketplaces and business platforms to target unsuspecting buyers with fake commercial offers.
