A Bengaluru resident’s honest account of working part-time as a bike rider for Rapido has gone viral on social media, sparking discussion around gig work and short-term income options in the city.

In a Reddit post titled “Rode as a Rapido Captain in Bangalore for 4 days (part-time, mostly night rides)”, the user shared a transparent breakdown of earnings, expenses and working hours, saying the job could be useful for people in need of quick or emergency cash.

Night rides, better incentives

The user said they worked purely part-time, mostly after 10 pm, as night-time incentives were better. Riding a Hero Super Splendor that gave around 45 km per litre, they covered close to 200 km over four days.

In total, they worked about 17 hours, with the highest earnings recorded on day two — ₹750 for a five-hour shift.

Earnings breakdown

  • Total earnings: ₹2,220
  • Petrol cost: ~₹400
  • Net earnings: ~₹1,820
  • Total working time: ~17 hours

“Not saying it’s amazing money, but for short-term or emergency cash, riding Rapido part-time — especially at night — is reasonable if you already own a bike,” the user wrote.

Social media reacts

The post drew widespread attention, with many users appreciating the transparency and calling it “useful information” for those considering gig work.

One commenter shared, “My roommate does office work from 2–10 pm and then Rapido from 10 pm to 6 am. His target is ₹1,000 per night, and he usually manages it.”

Another added, “Thanks for this breakdown. I’m in Mumbai and thinking of doing this as a side gig on Saturdays.”

Some users also highlighted Rapido’s business model, noting that riders typically pay a fixed daily amount to the platform and keep the ride earnings. Others pointed out that experienced riders combine apps like Rapido and Porter to maximise income.

A snapshot of gig reality

While the post makes it clear that bike taxi work is not a long-term solution for everyone, it has offered a realistic look at how gig platforms can provide temporary financial support — especially for those who already have a vehicle and flexible hours.
