Mangaluru: The much-awaited Vande Bharat Express connecting Bengaluru and Mangaluru has moved a step closer to becoming a reality, with the South Western Railway’s Mysuru Division set to commence trial runs from August 11.
The development has raised hopes among passengers, especially those travelling between Bengaluru and coastal Karnataka, who have long awaited a faster and more comfortable rail service.
Trial runs to assess operational readiness
Railway officials will conduct trial runs to evaluate the train’s performance, safety and operational readiness along the Bengaluru–Mangaluru route before the service is formally introduced.
The trials are expected to assess track compatibility, signalling systems, speed parameters and overall operational efficiency.
Delay due to Automatic Emergency Braking system
Earlier, Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna had announced that the Vande Bharat Express would be introduced on the Bengaluru–Mangaluru route by June 2026.
However, the launch was delayed as the railway authorities awaited the availability of a Vande Bharat rake equipped with the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system, a key safety feature required for operations on the route.
With the required rake now available, preparations have gathered pace for the trial phase.
Faster connectivity for coastal Karnataka
Once operational, the Vande Bharat Express is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Bengaluru and Mangaluru while offering passengers modern amenities and improved comfort.
The service is also expected to strengthen tourism, business travel and regional connectivity between Karnataka’s capital and the coastal districts.
Railway officials are expected to finalise the launch schedule after the successful completion of the trial runs and necessary safety clearances.
