Bengaluru Metro sets up baby feeding centres at key stations, aiding nursing mothers

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), in collaboration with NGOs, has introduced baby feeding centres at five metro stations, including the latest one at Baiyappanahalli. This initiative, developed with the Child Help Foundation and Sibdi Swavalamban Foundation, provides nursing mothers with clean, private, and safe spaces.

The feeding centres, currently available at Baiyappanahalli, Majestic, Yeshwantpur, Kengeri, and Yelachenahalli, are equipped with 8×8 rooms featuring broad benches that can accommodate up to four mothers. These benches also allow mothers to rest if needed. Passengers can contact station customer care for alternate private spaces if no feeding centre is available.

A senior BMRCL official stated that maintenance is managed internally, with future expansions depending on cost considerations. “This initiative addresses a critical need for mothers, especially during emergencies,” the official added.

Positive feedback from mothers

Malathi, a housewife, praised the hygienic and convenient facility at Baiyappanahalli. Shifa, a saleswoman and daily commuter, found the centres safe and private, especially for her six-month-old baby. Snehalata, a teacher, highlighted her comfort using the Majestic Metro Station facility, initially hesitant but reassured by its cleanliness and privacy.

Mothers and commuters have welcomed this step, urging BMRCL to expand the initiative across more stations to support women with infants.
