As Bengaluru gears up for the New Year celebrations, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has issued a stern warning against any form of misbehaviour or lawbreaking during the festivities. Speaking to reporters after a book launch at M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday, Shivakumar emphasized that citizens should maintain decency and follow the law. “Consider this a request or even a warning. No one should break the law during New Year celebrations,” he cautioned.

To ensure safety and law enforcement, the city has over 10,000 surveillance cameras monitoring public movements. While official reports suggest the presence of 8,000 cameras, most of these (7,500) are part of the Safe City Project, with an additional 817 cameras installed at major party hotspots by the police. The deputy chief minister reassured that the monitoring would help maintain public order during the celebrations.

Addressing the public mourning for the passing of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Shivakumar clarified that only government programs had been cancelled, while private events could proceed as planned. He urged the youth to stay vigilant and behave responsibly, given the heightened security measures.

Ahead of the New Year’s Eve, Bengaluru’s police have stepped up their efforts to curb crime. The police have seized contraband worth ₹25.20 crore and arrested 73 individuals, including three foreigners, with 54 cases registered against drug peddlers. The police’s canine squad has been active in major areas like the CBD and party hotspots, performing security checks.

To ensure safety, 11,830 police officers will be on duty, along with 89 platoons from the Karnataka State Police Reserve (KSRP) and 23 platoons from the City Armed Reserve (CAR). These forces have already been deployed at major party venues to monitor suspicious activities and prevent any untoward incidents.

With stringent security in place and a clear warning to maintain discipline, Bengaluru is aiming for a safe and orderly New Year celebration.
