A Bengaluru police sub-inspector has been arrested after his wife accused him of dowry harassment, physical assault, criminal intimidation and attempting to attack her and her father with a machete. The accused, Bhairappa KS, who was attached to the Bengaluru City Police Control Room, was taken into custody on Tuesday following the registration of a First Information Report (FIR).

According to the complainant, the arrest came only after she approached senior police officers, alleging that the local police had initially registered only a non-cognisable report (NCR) despite the seriousness of the allegations.

Wife alleges years of abuse and dowry demands

The woman stated that she married Bhairappa five years ago and that the couple, along with their three-year-old daughter, lived on Magadi Main Road in Bengaluru. She alleged that while the initial years of their marriage were peaceful, her husband’s behaviour later became abusive.

She claimed Bhairappa frequently assaulted her after returning home under the influence of alcohol and repeatedly demanded lakhs of rupees in dowry, complaining that he had not received a house or a site during the marriage. According to the complaint, he regularly forced her to seek money from her parents and assaulted her whenever she failed to meet his demands.

Machete attack allegation triggers FIR

The complainant further alleged that Bhairappa maintained relationships with several women, brought some of them home, and even promised marriage to others despite already being married. She also accused him of threatening both her and her father with the help of criminals.

The latest incident reportedly occurred on July 12, when her father visited their home to mediate a domestic dispute. During the argument, Bhairappa allegedly attempted to attack him with a machete. Although the family contacted the 112 emergency helpline, they claimed no immediate action was taken.

Case to be transferred for investigation

The woman also revealed that her father had purchased two cars and provided money to satisfy her husband’s repeated demands, yet he allegedly failed to support her and their daughter.

Bhairappa had previously been suspended after the Lokayukta booked him in an alleged bribery case while he was serving at the Subramanyapura Police Station last year.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Anitha B Hadannavar said the incident falls under the jurisdiction of Tavarekere Police Station in Bengaluru South district and the case will be transferred there for further investigation.
