The Bengaluru Traffic Police recently called on residents, particularly IT professionals, to choose public transport as a means to ease city traffic, cut emissions, and contribute to a sustainable future. Speaking on World Transport Day, Police Commissioner B. Dayananda emphasized that even one day per week of public transport usage by IT employees could significantly alleviate traffic, potentially reducing congestion by 20%.
Senior officers, including Commissioner Dayananda, have been encouraged to set an example by regularly using public transport themselves. The police also invited citizens to pledge their support for public transit and eco-friendly travel options, like cycling and walking, for shorter trips. This initiative aims to promote alternatives to private vehicles that often exacerbate Bengaluru’s traffic and pollution issues.
In support, Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) highlighted on social media the environmental advantages of reducing car and two-wheeler use, noting that public transport cuts down both traffic density and air pollution.
Shivaprakash Devaraju from Bengaluru Traffic-South reiterated that switching to public transit is among the most impactful steps residents can take toward a cleaner, less congested city. Public transit options like BMTC buses, metro lines, and auto-rickshaws are readily available and help reduce carbon emissions.
