On March 28th, 2024, Bengaluru experienced its highest maximum temperature in seven years, reaching a scorching 37.9 degrees Celsius. This unprecedented heatwave has raised concerns amidst the city’s already severe water crisis, exacerbating the challenges faced by residents.

The lack of rainfall and depletion of water sources have intensified water scarcity across Bengaluru, making the effects of the heatwave even more pronounced. According to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC), this year’s temperature surge is unusual, surpassing records for the same date over the past seven years. The last time Bengaluru witnessed such high temperatures in March was in 2017, with a maximum temperature of 37.5°C.

Several factors contribute to this sudden temperature rise, including the absence of pre-monsoon showers, minimal cloud cover, and the urban heat island effect caused by rapid urbanization and increased concrete structures.

As temperatures soar, residents are advised to stay indoors, stay hydrated, and avoid prolonged sun exposure to prevent heat-related illnesses. The KSNDMC has issued a heatwave alert, warning of the possibility of further temperature spikes in the coming days. Precautionary measures include avoiding outdoor activities during peak sunlight hours and wearing light, breathable clothing.

Meanwhile, authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to take necessary measures to ensure the well-being of residents. In a hopeful turn, the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre has shared Cumulative Rainfall Forecast Maps for the next two weeks, raising hopes of relief from the heatwave and water crisis with expected rainfall in some areas.
