BENGALURU: Road accidents in Bengaluru have risen sharply over the past five years, highlighting growing concerns about traffic safety in a city experiencing rapid urbanisation and an increase in vehicles. The trend has renewed attention on speeding, road infrastructure, traffic enforcement and the safety of motorists and pedestrians.
The report indicates that accidents in the city have increased by 70% over five years. However, the exact figures and the period used for comparison could not be independently verified from the full report.
Rising accident numbers raise road safety concerns
Bengaluru’s expanding population, growing vehicle density and heavy traffic volumes have placed increasing pressure on its road network. Congestion, unsafe driving and infrastructure deficiencies can create hazardous conditions for commuters, particularly on busy arterial roads and major junctions.
Earlier reports have also highlighted a significant increase in road accidents in the city. In November 2024, The New Indian Express reported that Bengaluru recorded 1,928 road accident cases in 2020, compared with 3,969 cases up to October 31, 2024. The figures were presented by a senior Karnataka police official during a road-safety campaign.
The same report noted that recorded fatalities rose from 344 in 2020 to 723 by October 31, 2024. These figures cover different periods and should not be treated as a direct comparison with the 70% increase cited in the latest report.
Overspeeding and road conditions remain concerns
Traffic authorities have repeatedly identified overspeeding, negligent driving, fatigue among heavy-vehicle drivers and inadequate road infrastructure as factors contributing to serious accidents.
Poor lighting, missing road markings, unsafe junctions, incomplete service roads and construction-related disruptions can increase risks for road users. Two-wheeler riders are particularly vulnerable in collisions, making helmet use and adherence to speed limits important safety measures.
Pedestrians also face risks on roads where footpaths are discontinuous, crossings are inadequate or vehicles do not yield at designated crossing points.
Enforcement and infrastructure improvements needed
Road-safety experts and police officials have emphasised the need for a combination of engineering improvements, enforcement and public awareness to reduce accidents.
Measures include identifying accident-prone locations, improving street lighting and road markings, correcting dangerous junction designs, providing safe pedestrian crossings and enforcing speed limits. Regular checks against drunk driving, dangerous manoeuvres and other traffic violations can also help prevent crashes.
Coordination among traffic police, civic agencies and road-owning authorities is important to ensure that identified safety problems are addressed promptly.
Need for sustained road safety measures
The reported increase in Bengaluru’s road accidents underlines the importance of examining accident data alongside fatalities, injuries, vehicle growth and road conditions. A rise in reported crashes does not by itself explain the reasons behind the trend, making detailed data and location-specific assessments essential.
For commuters, following traffic rules, wearing helmets and seat belts, avoiding mobile-phone use while driving and maintaining safe speeds remain essential precautions.
As Bengaluru continues to expand, sustained investment in safer road design, better enforcement and responsible road-user behaviour will be important to reducing the risk of accidents and protecting lives.
