Bengaluru: The State reported the first case of Zika virus after a five-year-old girl tested positive for the virus on Monday December 13, said Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. K. Sudhakar.

Speaking to mediapesons here, he said that the girl had been complaining of fever and other symptoms for over 15 days when she was first admitted to Sindhanur Taluk Hospital. “The patient was taken to VIMS in Vijayanagara after her dengue fever test came back positive,” the Minister added.

The girl’s blood and urine samples were later sent to the Virology Lab in Pune, where results showing that the girl had tested positive for the Zika virus were obtained, the minister said, noting that she was under medical observation.

He further said that people should not panic about the Zika virus and that his department will provide detailed guidelines and regulations to stop the virus’ spread.
