In a significant development to decongest Bengaluru, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar announced the construction of 150 km of flyovers and signal-free corridors. These will be part of a package of enhancing infrastructure in the city to ease the movement of vehicles.

Announcement Details

Speaking at the 515th birth anniversary celebrations of Bengaluru founder Kempe Gowda at Kanteerava Stadium on June 27, 2024, Shivakumar reiterated the government’s commitment to the development of Bengaluru. The minister in charge of the Bengaluru City Development portfolio put before the media different plans to set right the traffic conditions in Bengaluru.

Renovation of Peripheral Ring Road (PRR)

Shivakumar also talked about the hurdles encountered on the Peripheral Ring Road (PRR) project, which reached the stage of calling tenders eight times but was unsuccessful. In this regard, he proposed remodeling the PRR as a business corridor through the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA).

“Though tenders have been called even up to eight times, a decision has been taken to remodel it as a business corridor through the BDA, claiming that there are no takers for the PRR project,” he said.

Future Plans and Approval by the Cabinet

The Deputy Chief Minister said the remodeled PRR project would shortly be placed before the State Cabinet for approval. This is poised to decongest traffic and enhance economic activities by converting PRR into a bustling commercial center.

Commitment to City Development

Vowing to place Bengaluru’s development on a priority, his announcement reflects how much infrastructure improvement is being contemplated in the long term, meant to resolve the city’s traffic problem. The planned construction of flyovers and signal-free corridors is anticipated to significantly enhance urban mobility and reduce travel time for commuters.

Conclusion

The 150 km of flyovers and signal-free corridors is a welcome step in decongesting Bengaluru traffic, and the PRR project’s remodeling is also being done as a business corridor. These further underline the Karnataka government’s commitment toward infrastructure changes to translate into urban development on solid, sustainable grounds.
