Bengaluru is experiencing a severe issue with wrong-side driving, with an average of 26 cases registered every hour. In the first 15 days of August, Bengaluru accounted for 9,397 of the 12,096 total wrong-side driving cases in Karnataka, representing about 77.6% of the state’s cases. Other districts such as Hubli-Dharwad, Mangaluru, Belagavi, and Kalburgi reported significantly lower numbers of 381, 508, 222, and 226 cases, respectively.
Additional Director General of Police (Traffic) Alok Kumar emphasized the need for more than just enforcement to address this problem, highlighting that changing driving habits is crucial. The surge in violations in Bengaluru can be attributed to factors like traffic congestion, inadequate road infrastructure, and insufficient driver awareness.
The police have responded by intensifying enforcement efforts, including increased patrols, more traffic cameras, and regular checkpoints. They are also working with local authorities to improve road signage and markings. Public awareness campaigns are being conducted through media, workshops, and community outreach to educate drivers about the risks and consequences of wrong-side driving.
The goal is to reduce incidents, ensure road safety, and promote adherence to traffic rules to prevent accidents and save lives.
