In a major crackdown, Bengaluru Traffic Police booked 17,218 cases in just seven days against e-commerce and food delivery agents for violations like helmetless riding, wrong-side driving, and signal jumping. On Friday alone, 4,293 cases were registered, leading to fines totaling ₹22.13 lakh.
The intensified drive followed an awareness campaign on traffic discipline among delivery personnel. A senior police official emphasized, “The goal isn’t fines, but ensuring road safety.”
Key Insights from the Initiative:
- Major Offenses: 2,318 helmetless riding cases, 472 for no-entry violations, 387 for wrong-side driving, and 258 for signal jumping.
- Root Cause: Delivery timelines imposed by platforms force agents to flout rules, endangering themselves and others.
- Collaboration Efforts: Police have held meetings with e-commerce and food delivery firms to address safety issues and improve compliance.
Delivery agents face penalties like covering the cost of free food for late deliveries, adding to their stress. The food delivery union has urged companies to set realistic deadlines considering Bengaluru’s traffic challenges.
The campaign highlights the need for coordinated efforts between traffic authorities, companies, and agents to balance safety and service efficiency.
