A young professional from Bengaluru narrowly escaped a terrifying late-night ordeal at the Vijayawada bus stand after using the Shakti safety app to alert police in real time.
The woman arrived at the bus stand around 12.30 am on April 24 and was approached by an auto-rickshaw driver identified as Phanindra. He reportedly insisted several times that she hire his vehicle for a trip to Namburu. Though hesitant at first, she eventually agreed.
Presence of mind helped save her
Before boarding, the woman took a photograph of the auto’s number plate and uploaded it on the Shakti app. During the journey, the driver allegedly began speaking indecently to her, causing immediate concern.
Realising the danger, she quickly shared further details through the app while pretending to speak to someone at home. Her alert was instantly monitored by police officials tracking the vehicle’s movement.
Police intercept vehicle in time
Mangalagiri police traced the auto near the Kazha toll plaza. SI Venkat and his team intercepted the vehicle just before the situation could worsen. The woman was safely rescued, and the driver was taken into custody on the spot.
Officials said the woman’s timely action and quick digital alert played a key role in preventing a possible crime.
Leaders praise technology-led rescue
Minister Nara Lokesh reportedly appreciated the swift response of the Mangalagiri Rural Police and said the case showed how technology can strengthen women’s safety.
Police have also urged women travelling alone to keep safety apps active and share vehicle details whenever they feel unsafe.
Safety lesson for travellers
The incident is a strong reminder that awareness, presence of mind and technology can save lives. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the accused
