Bengaluru: A devastating bike taxi accident involving a Bengaluru-based interior designer has reignited concerns over passenger safety and the accountability of ride-hailing aggregators after the victim alleged she received little support despite suffering life-threatening injuries.

Sani Krishna, 32, was travelling from Byrasandra to her office in Domlur on June 17 when the accident occurred less than a kilometre into her journey.

Woman suffers multiple injuries

According to Sani, the bike taxi rider allegedly attempted to overtake a tractor, lost control of the vehicle, causing her to fall and sustain severe injuries.

She said she suffered seven fractured ribs, a broken shoulder, serious facial injuries requiring plastic surgery and underwent surgery to remove her spleen. After receiving initial treatment at a nearby hospital, she was shifted to Manipal Hospital, where she underwent multiple surgeries.

More than two weeks after the accident, Sani remains bedridden and is undergoing treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Family seeks accountability

Sani has alleged that despite opting for a safety feature intended for women passengers, she did not receive the level of support she expected from the bike taxi aggregator following the accident.

Her family claimed they have already spent over ₹25 lakh on medical treatment and are yet to receive any compensation. They also alleged that repeated requests for assistance have not yielded a satisfactory response.

Following criticism on social media, the aggregator issued a statement saying it is in contact with the family and will continue to extend all possible support while reviewing the incident.

Police register case

Based on a complaint filed by the victim’s friend, the Jeevan Bhima Nagar Traffic Police have registered an FIR in connection with the accident.

Police have booked the tractor driver and the bike taxi rider under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to rash and negligent driving and endangering human life.

Investigators have collected CCTV footage from the area, and the case remains under investigation. The incident has once again brought the spotlight on passenger safety standards and accountability within the rapidly growing bike taxi sector.
