Bengaluru: A Bengaluru woman’s thoughtful take on rent and everyday expenses has gone viral on social media, with many saying it changed the way they think about money.

In an Instagram video, content creator Upasna Dogra encouraged people to stop viewing essential expenses as “money lost” and instead see them as investments that support their daily lives and well-being. Her message has resonated with thousands, particularly those from middle-class families.

‘Money isn’t just leaving you—it is taking care of you’

In the video, Dogra explains that many people grow up believing every expense is a financial burden because they are constantly taught to save and avoid spending.

She said that this mindset often creates guilt around paying for basic necessities such as rent, food and healthcare. Instead, she urged people to ask not just where their money is going, but what it is doing for them.

Using her own monthly rent as an example, she explained that paying ₹20,000 may initially seem expensive, but when viewed as around ₹650 a day, it becomes the cost of having a safe and comfortable home after a long day.

She made a similar comparison for groceries, saying ₹6,000 a month works out to roughly ₹200 a day for proper nutrition and health.

Social media users relate

The video, captioned “It’s just about perspective,” quickly gained attention online.

Many users said they identified with the emotional burden of spending, especially those raised in middle-class households. Several commented that the video helped them view necessary expenses with less guilt and greater appreciation.

Others described the message as a refreshing reminder that financial awareness is not only about reducing expenses but also recognising the value they add to everyday life.
