The recent collapse of a residential building in Babusapalya, which resulted in nine fatalities, has exposed Bengaluru’s ongoing issues with unauthorized apartment construction. The incident has brought attention to the unchecked rise of unsafe buildings in densely populated areas, with some structures built on plots as small as 250 square feet. One narrow, five-story building in Nanjappa Gardens went viral on social media, humorously compared to the Burj Khalifa due to its precarious height.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) promptly demolished the Nanjappa Gardens building, serving notices to the owner to clear the debris. Civic authorities, directed by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, have pledged stricter action against illegal constructions. DK Shivakumar confirmed that officials will actively seek out unauthorized buildings across the city to prevent further incidents, with demolition efforts already underway in areas like Horamavu and Hennur.
Residents and social media users continue to voice their concerns about the safety risks posed by illegal constructions, urging stricter regulatory enforcement.
