Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited’s newly launched DClutter app has received an encouraging response from residents, recording more than 5,000 downloads within days of its launch on May 16.

The app has already received nearly 500 requests for the collection of bulky household waste such as sofas, cots, tables, and other unused furniture items that are usually not picked up by regular garbage collection services.

Free doorstep collection for bulky waste

BSWML Chief Executive Officer Karee Gowda said dedicated BSWML vehicles would visit locations pinned on the app and collect bulky waste directly from residents’ doorsteps free of cost.

Officials stated that, for now, bulky waste collection has been planned once a week, and all current requests are expected to be attended to on May 23.

Authorities added that recyclable items would be sent to authorised recycling centres, while non-recyclable waste would be diverted to waste-to-energy plants.

App aims to reduce roadside dumping

According to BSWML officials, the initiative was introduced to address the growing problem of discarded furniture and bulky household items being dumped on roadsides and footpaths across the city.

Officials noted that regular scrap dealers usually accept only valuable materials such as iron and steel, leaving residents with limited options for disposing of old furniture and non-recyclable household items.

This often results in illegal dumping during night hours, creating environmental issues and affecting Bengaluru’s cleanliness and urban appearance.

Residents welcome initiative but report app issues

Many residents welcomed the initiative, saying Bengaluru had long needed a proper system for bulky waste disposal.

However, some users complained on social media that the DClutter app appeared too basic and experienced loading issues. Several users alleged that the app may have been launched before being fully optimised.

Despite initial technical concerns, the initiative is being viewed as an important step towards improving waste management and urban cleanliness in Bengaluru.
