Bengaluru: Many of Bengaluru’s key infrastructure projects continue to remain incomplete, adding to the daily woes of commuters and raising serious questions about execution, planning and accountability. With construction stretching across years and deadlines being revised repeatedly, residents navigating the city’s congested roads say their patience is wearing thin. Experts, too, have expressed reservations about whether several long-pending flyovers, grade separators and bridges will be completed within the newly announced timelines.
The prolonged construction activity has worsened traffic congestion, increased travel time and fuel consumption, and dampened hopes of smoother mobility in India’s IT capital.
Yelahanka police station circle flyover
One of the most anticipated projects in north Bengaluru is the integrated flyover at Yelahanka police station circle, covering Shesharipuram College and BWSSB Junction. The project was launched in December 2021 with the aim of easing congestion in the Yelahanka region, which has witnessed rapid residential and commercial growth.
Despite over four years of construction, the flyover is still incomplete. The latest official timeline states that the project is expected to be completed by June 2026, though earlier projections had indicated January 2026 as the finish date.
- Start date: December 2021
- Expected completion: June 2026
Ullal Main Road grade separators
The grade separators on Kengeri Outer Ring Road across Ullal Main Road are among the oldest ongoing projects in the city. Construction began in November 2020, but progress has been slow due to land acquisition hurdles, utility shifting and repeated revisions in project scope.
Residents of Ullal and Kengeri have been enduring traffic snarls and dust pollution for over five years. Authorities now claim the project will be completed by February 2026.
- Start date: November 2020
- Expected completion: February 2026
HMT Road grade separator
Another long-delayed project is the grade separator at the HMT Road and Pipeline Road junction. Like the Ullal project, construction began in November 2020 but remains unfinished.
This junction is a critical connector between residential areas and industrial zones, and the delay has significantly impacted daily commuters. Officials have set February 2026 as the revised completion date.
- Start date: November 2020
- Expected completion: February 2026
Kerekodi Road grade separator
The grade separator at Outer Ring Road near Kerekodi Road, Hosakerehalli Junction, has been under construction since August 2020. Despite being in progress for more than five years, the project has yet to be completed.
Authorities now project January 2026 as the completion date, though locals remain sceptical given the pace of work so far.
- Start date: August 2020
- Expected completion: January 2026
Annapoorneshwari Nagara Main Road grade separators
Grade separators on Kengeri Outer Ring Road across Annapoorneshwari Nagara Main Road were taken up in July 2022. While relatively newer compared to other projects, the work has already faced delays due to cost escalation and approval processes.
The project is now targeted for completion by March 2026.
- Start date: July 2022
- Expected completion: March 2026
Pipeline Road via Kurubarahalli
The Pipeline Road project via Kurubarahalli, connecting West of Chord Road to Outer Ring Road, began in July 2022. This stretch is expected to play a crucial role in decongesting traffic in west Bengaluru.
As per current estimates, the project is slated for completion by February 2026.
- Start date: July 2022
- Expected completion: February 2026
Ejipura corridor project
The Ejipura corridor, connecting Ejipura Main Road, Inner Ring Road, Sony World Junction and Kendriya Sadan Junction, remains one of the most controversial infrastructure projects in the city. Construction began in November 2023, but progress has been uneven, drawing criticism from residents and commuters alike.
The corridor is now expected to be completed by June 2026.
- Start date: November 2023
- Expected completion: June 2026
Ring Road improvement projects
Several improvement works and bridges are underway on major ring road stretches, including NH Tumakuru Road Junction to Nayandanahalli Junction, and Outer Ring Road from Sumanahalli Junction to Ambedkar College.
These projects, which began in July 2022, are expected to be wrapped up by February 2026.
- Start date: July 2022
- Expected completion: February 2026
Jakkur railway overbridge
The railway overbridge between Yelahanka and Channasandra stations at Jakkur is a comparatively recent project, launched in March 2024. Authorities have set an ambitious completion target of February 2026.
- Start date: March 2024
- Expected completion: February 2026
Yelahanka railway station approach ramps
Approach ramps to the railway underpass connecting Yelahanka New Town and Old Town began in February 2023. The project is eagerly awaited by residents on both sides of the railway line and is expected to be completed by March 2026.
- Start date: February 2023
- Expected completion: March 2026
Projects yet to take off
Some projects have barely moved beyond the planning stage. The bridge near Bengaluru University junction over an existing stormwater drain, initiated in July 2022, remains suspended. Similarly, the grade separator at Jalahalli Circle along Subroto Mukherjee Road and Peenya Industrial Ring Road, announced in July 2019, is yet to see any construction activity.
Conclusion
While authorities continue to assure completion of most projects by 2026, Bengaluru’s commuters remain wary. Years of delays, shifting deadlines and stalled works have eroded public trust. Urban experts warn that unless land acquisition, approvals and project management improve significantly, the city’s infrastructure backlog will continue to grow, further straining its already overburdened road network.
