Bengaluru’s Mural Movement: Art with Purpose and Community Impact

Bengaluru's Mural Movement Art With Purpose And Community Impact

Bengaluru’s streets are being transformed through vibrant murals, thanks to nonprofits like Let’s Be The Change and India Rising Trust. These murals are more than just decorations—they represent the heartbeat of the city, with each artwork speaking to local issues and aspirations. Whether it’s murals urging cleanliness at Majestic bus stand or emphasizing waste segregation at Victoria Hospital, these artworks aim to inspire action and reflection within the community.

Anirudh S Dutt, founder of Let’s Be The Change, explains their approach is rooted in dialogue with the local community. “Before we even begin to paint, we ask ourselves: What does this neighborhood represent? What message do its people want to share?” Their work aims to foster community ownership, making the murals resonate deeply with the people who live in those areas.

Meanwhile, India Rising Trust focuses on creating a visual language that ties the city together. With signature designs featured in underpasses and other public spaces, their art emphasizes order and uniformity while encouraging a sense of belonging. Aniruddha Abhyankar, chief design officer, mentions that these murals are created with careful consideration, as they avoid using text or overly detailed imagery that could distract drivers.

For Geechugalu, a collective of artists, each project is an opportunity to connect with the community and bring the place’s history and stories to life. They worked with residents and urban planners to transform Malleswaram into a walkable art experience, bringing the neighborhood’s identity to the forefront.

One notable example is Bhoomika Ananth’s initiative, Wall As Your Canvas. Starting with government school walls, Bhoomika aims to replace outdated, uninspiring murals with ones that encourage students to dream big. Her project creates murals that feature famous personalities and serve as inspiration for young minds. For Bhoomika, each mural is a catalyst for social impact, a tool to change how people see their surroundings and themselves.

These artists and initiatives prove that murals are more than just decorative—they are powerful tools for social change, community building, and personal expression. They transform ordinary spaces into vibrant reflections of the people who inhabit them.
