The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Bengaluru, conducted search and seizure operations at two reputed jewellery stores in Jayanagar 4th Block and Chickpet, seizing gold ornaments weighing 1,618.17 grams and valued at nearly ₹2.77 crore.
According to officials, the seized ornaments allegedly did not carry the mandatory Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) markings, which are required under the BIS Act, 2016.
Gold ornaments seized during inspections
The raids were carried out on Thursday as part of BIS’ ongoing enforcement drive against violations of hallmarking regulations and misuse of the BIS Standard Mark.
The operation at the Jayanagar premises was supervised by Vinodini Kishore, Scientist-E and Director, while the Chickpet inspection was led by P Jayachandra Babu, Scientist-E and Director.
Officials stated that the action was initiated based on credible inputs regarding suspected non-compliance with hallmarking norms.
BIS urges consumers to verify jewellery authenticity
BIS has advised consumers to verify the authenticity of hallmarked gold jewellery using the BIS Care app before making purchases. Authorities also encouraged the public to report suspicious or non-compliant products to help prevent deceptive trade practices.
The agency said such enforcement actions are aimed at safeguarding consumer interests and curbing the circulation of counterfeit or substandard products in the market.

Hallmarking regulations were introduced to ensure the purity and quality of gold jewellery sold across India. BIS officials said regular inspections and raids will continue across markets to ensure jewellers comply with national standards.
