Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah responded forcefully to BJP’s criticism regarding the alleged gang rape and robbery of a woman in central Bengaluru. The incident took place when the woman, waiting for a bus at KR Market, asked the accused for directions, who then lured her to Godown Street and assaulted her. Siddaramaiah, in defense, questioned whether such crimes did not occur during the BJP’s time in power, causing an uproar. “Did rape incidents not happen during the BJP regime?” he stated while addressing the media. “Crimes should not happen. Women deserve safety, but some individuals commit heinous acts.” His remarks implied that similar crimes had taken place under various governments.
The woman filed a complaint at the Bangalore Central Women’s Police Station, leading to the arrest of two suspects. Bengaluru’s police commissioner B. Dayananda confirmed their detention. Meanwhile, opposition leader R. Ashoka took the chance to criticize the Congress government, accusing them of failing to uphold law and order in the state. He called on Siddaramaiah to resign, claiming the people were living in fear and women’s safety was at risk.
During his speech at the ‘Jai Bapu, Jai Bhim, Jai Samvidhan’ rally in Belagavi, Siddaramaiah reaffirmed Congress’s commitment to Gandhian ideals. He criticized the BJP, suggesting their opposition to Gandhi’s principles, and stressed the importance of promoting his values to future generations. This controversy highlights the ongoing political tensions between Congress and BJP in Karnataka, particularly regarding crime and safety issues.
