After the recent packaged milk price hike, consumers are now facing another kitchen staple becoming more expensive, with bread prices reportedly increasing by up to ₹5 per pack in Mumbai and surrounding areas.
The latest price revision comes amid rising fuel costs following recent petrol and diesel price hikes linked to the ongoing tensions involving Iran.
Bread makers cite rising production costs
According to market reports, leading bread manufacturer Modern Bread revised prices for several basic bread variants on May 16.
Trade observers believe other major brands such as Britannia Industries and Wibs may also increase prices soon.
Bakers and industry representatives say the increase is driven by rising production and transportation expenses following the sudden spike in fuel prices.
Multiple factors behind price increase
Industry sources stated that the price rise is linked to several factors, including:
- Higher petrol and diesel prices
- Increased transportation and delivery expenses
- Rising commercial LPG costs
- More expensive packaging materials
- Higher prices of salt, preservatives, and imported raw materials
- Weakening rupee affecting import costs
Experts say packaged food manufacturers are facing mounting operational pressure as logistics and ingredient expenses continue to climb.
More packaged foods may become costlier
Reports suggest that biscuits and other packaged food products could also witness price hikes in the coming weeks if fuel and supply-chain costs remain elevated.
The rising prices have added to concerns among middle-class households already dealing with increasing expenses for milk, vegetables, fuel, and daily essentials.
Healthy breakfast alternatives gain attention
Amid rising bread prices, nutrition experts and social media users are also highlighting affordable Indian breakfast alternatives such as:

- Upma
- Idli
- Besan chilla
