Bengaluru: Close on the heels of a Tanzania student facing abuse in the city, the Bangalore University (BU) has set up an international cell to address the problems faced by these students.

At the same time, officials said there was a need for international visitors to understand local culture. It has also directed all affiliated colleges to conduct an orientation programme for foreign students about the local culture at the beginning of the academic year.

Speaking at the Japan Habba 2016, K.N. Ninge Gowda, registrar (evaluation) of BU said at there was a need for international students to be counselled so that they were aware of the sentiments of local residents.

The varsity has asked all affiliated colleges to furnish details of international students in their institutions. “Earlier, college managements would give us details only when we would go for renewal of affiliation. Karnataka has the highest number of foreign students but many colleges do not maintain these records well. From now on we want them to submit these details regularly,” said Professor Gowda, reported The Hindu.
