Bengaluru: A financial dispute linked to a chit fund, along with a failed relationship, has emerged as the suspected motive behind the murder of a law student in Bengaluru, giving the investigation a new direction.
The victim, Amrutha, a law student who also worked at a diagnostic centre, was allegedly stabbed by Surya near her residence in Kodihalli under the Jeevan Bheemanagar police station limits on July 13. She succumbed to her injuries on July 15 after undergoing treatment in hospital.
Police probe financial angle
According to investigators, Surya is the younger brother of Dhanush, who was reportedly in a relationship with Amrutha for nearly four years.
Police said Surya allegedly attacked Amrutha during an altercation, stabbing her in the chest and back.
During the investigation, officials found that Amrutha’s mother was operating a chit fund in which members of Dhanush’s family had invested. Police suspect that around ₹5 lakh remained unpaid even after the chit matured.
Investigators believe Surya repeatedly demanded repayment of the amount and became increasingly frustrated when the money was not returned.
Relationship issues also under investigation
Police further stated that Amrutha had ended her relationship with Dhanush after allegedly learning that he had concealed details about his previous marriage, divorce and child.
Officials suspect that Surya’s anger over the financial dispute, combined with the breakdown of his brother’s relationship with Amrutha, may have contributed to the fatal attack.
According to police, Dhanush and Surya had visited Amrutha’s residence on the day of the incident. Following the stabbing, Surya allegedly attempted to flee but was caught by local residents and handed over to the police.
The accused remains in police custody, while investigators continue to examine all aspects of the case. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and further evidence is being collected before filing the final chargesheet.
