Bengaluru: High drama unfolded on Old Airport Road on Monday morning when a commuter travelling with his pregnant wife staged a protest after traffic was halted to facilitate the movement of Karnataka Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot‘s convoy.

The incident, which was captured on video and widely shared on social media, reignited public debate over traffic restrictions imposed for VIP movements and the inconvenience caused to ordinary commuters.

Man sits on road in protest

According to reports, traffic on Old Airport Road was temporarily stopped as part of security arrangements for the Governor’s convoy. The commuter, who was travelling in a car with his pregnant wife, became frustrated after being caught in the traffic blockade.

Upset over the delay, he stepped out of his vehicle and sat down in the middle of the road in a non-violent protest, demanding that traffic be allowed to move.

Videos from the scene showed traffic police personnel attempting to persuade him to leave the road and warning him of possible action if he refused to comply.

Questions VIP traffic restrictions

During the protest, the man questioned the need for prolonged traffic restrictions, especially when, according to him, the Governor had not yet departed from the airport.

Expressing his frustration, he reportedly told police that he also had important commitments and highlighted that his wife was pregnant and travelling with him.

He further questioned whether only public dignitaries should be treated as important while ordinary citizens are forced to endure long delays.

The remarks resonated with many commuters who have previously expressed concerns over traffic disruptions caused by VIP movements in major cities.

Police attempt to calm situation

Traffic police officers stationed at the location attempted to calm the commuter and repeatedly requested him to clear the road.

One officer assured the man that he was equally important and urged him to cooperate with authorities. However, the commuter continued to insist that traffic should be allowed to move and that motorists should not be inconvenienced unnecessarily.

The brief standoff attracted the attention of motorists and bystanders, causing further interest in the incident.

Protest ends after police intervention

After several minutes of discussion, a police patrol vehicle was reportedly called to the spot. Faced with the possibility of further intervention, the commuter eventually ended his protest.

He returned to his vehicle and moved away from the location, allowing traffic arrangements to continue without further disruption.

No untoward incidents were reported during the protest, and the situation was brought under control peacefully.

Debate over VIP movement resurfaces

The incident has once again sparked discussion about the impact of VIP convoy movements on daily commuters, particularly in heavily congested urban areas such as Bengaluru.

Many citizens have argued that while security for constitutional authorities is essential, traffic restrictions should be planned in a manner that minimises inconvenience to the public, especially during peak travel hours.

The episode highlights the growing frustration among motorists over traffic congestion and has renewed calls for more commuter-friendly traffic management during VIP movements.
