Bengaluru: A City Armed Reserve (CAR) constable was nabbed while trying to smuggle in two mobile phones into the Bengaluru Central Jail in Parappana Agrahara allegedly for the use of a terror suspect lodged here.

The detained, Dinesh,25, had joined the police department around five years ago and used to escort Madani and other terror suspects from jail to the court for trial over last three years.

On Wednesday, he arrived at the prison at 9.30am with a warrant meant for another prisoner and is said to have deposited his phone and belongings with the security personnel at the entrance. However while he was passing through Gate 2, the security personnel observed that the cover in which he was carrying the warrant was unusually large and checked it. They discovered two mobile phones in the cover which Dinesh was trying to smuggle in to be handed over to Nazir, an accused in the 2008 Bengaluru serial bomb blasts and a close aide of jailed PDP leader Abdul Nasser Madani.

The guards immediately notified the higher authorities who, in turn, alerted the jurisdictional police. The latter rushed to the prison, seized the phones and took him into custody.

During investigation, Dinesh is said to have confessed to have smuggled the phones in lieu of Rs 5000 bribe. Meanwhile the police will also probe why the terror suspect needed the phone within the jail
