Bengaluru: Former Chief Minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah said the country’s financial situation was deteriorating by the day. He said that the government has resorted to a vicious attempt to deceive the public by manipulating figures.

“The Planning Commission was abolished, and the NITI Aayog was established in its place. The NITI Aayog’s job is to prepare the figures that the central government or the BJP government requires. The central government has ceased to conduct surveys that are supposed to be conducted fairly,” he said during a Congress brainstorming session in Udaipur, Rajasthan.

He gave the example of the National Sample Survey Office, which no longer conducts surveys. It conducted surveys on topics such as employment and presented the facts to governments. This institution’s surveys have been stopped completely. The survey was suggested to be done in 2017-2018.

The agency also conducted a survey, but the Modi government ensured that it was not disclosed after learning that it was in direct contrast to the government’s functioning. He said that the report was to show that the country’s situation was deteriorating rapidly.

He said, “There is no chance of the country recovering unless people understand the current economic situation and raise their voices. The federal system is being weakened by the central government’s monetary policy, which is destroying the economy of states.”

“As of March 2014, the total debt of all states was Rs. 24.71 lakh Crore, but by March 2022, it had surpassed Rs. 70 lakh Crore. This sum will be around Rs. 80 lakh Crore if the loans made in 2022 are included,” said Siddaramaiah. He said that state fiscal deficits are also rising and that just four of the 14 major states had a fiscal deficit between 2012 and 2017, before demonetisation.
