Bengaluru: In a significant development, a Special Court in Bengaluru has ordered the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara over allegations of placing a ₹500 bet during a Kabaddi tournament.
The court directed the Kodigehalli police in Tumakuru district to register the FIR and conduct a comprehensive investigation into the matter, citing concerns about the message such actions by public representatives could send to society.
Complaint prompts court action
The directive came after a private complaint was filed by H. R. Nagabhushan, who argued that even a small or casual bet made by a person holding public office amounts to endorsing an illegal activity.
Taking cognisance of the complaint, the Special Court for Members of Legislative Assembly and Members of Parliament, presided over by K. N. Shivakumar, instructed police to initiate legal proceedings and probe the allegations in detail.
Incident during Kabaddi tournament
The incident reportedly took place during a state-level pre-university college Kabaddi tournament held in Tumakuru. According to the complaint, Parameshwara made a friendly bet of ₹500 with District Collector Shubha Kalyan, predicting that the Vijayapura team would win the match.
However, the Mangaluru team emerged victorious with a scoreline of 36–26.
Public remark leads to controversy
While distributing prizes to the winning team, the Minister allegedly disclosed in public that he had lost the bet. This statement later became the basis for the legal complaint.
Though the amount involved was nominal and the remark was reportedly made in a light-hearted manner, the complainant contended that betting is prohibited under law and that individuals in constitutional positions must avoid such conduct.
Legal and ethical implications
Legal experts note that the case raises questions about the interpretation of laws related to betting and gambling, particularly when such actions are informal or symbolic.
The court’s decision to order an FIR underscores the importance of accountability for public officials and adherence to legal norms, regardless of the scale of the alleged act.
Investigation to follow
Authorities are now expected to proceed with the investigation as per the court’s directive. The Kodigehalli police will examine the circumstances of the incident, statements made at the event and any supporting evidence.
Further action will depend on the findings of the investigation and applicable legal provisions.
Conclusion
The court’s order has brought attention to the responsibilities of public figures in upholding the law and setting an example. While the alleged act involved a small amount, the case highlights how even minor actions can have broader legal and social implications when undertaken by those in positions of authority.
