A major accident was narrowly averted in Bengaluru after a crane reportedly suffered a mechanical failure and rolled backwards into a three-storeyed building in the early hours of Saturday.
The incident occurred around 2 am on a sloping road in Kadirenahalli, near Banashankari. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported despite the heavy vehicle causing significant damage.
Crane loses control on uphill stretch
According to police, the crane was travelling uphill towards Banashankari from Training College Circle when it developed a mechanical problem midway through the climb.
Officials said the vehicle’s clutch plate allegedly malfunctioned while ascending the slope. Although the driver attempted to apply the brakes, the crane could not be brought under control and began rolling backwards.
“It was fortunate that there were no vehicles behind the crane at that time,” a police officer said.
Building and parked car damaged
As the crane rolled downhill, it first crashed into an electric pole on the road divider. The impact caused the vehicle to cross the divider before it continued moving backwards and rammed into a three-storeyed building.
The building housed a commercial establishment on the ground floor, while residential units occupied the upper floors.
A car parked near the structure was also damaged after being struck by the crane.
No casualties reported
Police said the occupants of the building escaped unharmed, preventing what could have turned into a serious tragedy.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the mechanical failure and are assessing the damage caused to the building, vehicle and surrounding infrastructure.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over vehicle maintenance and road safety, particularly on steep stretches within the city.
