Bengaluru: The Bengaluru police have arrested a 25-year-old man for allegedly threatening a family with a dagger during a road rage incident in Whitefield, an episode that was captured on a car’s dashboard camera and later helped investigators track down the accused. The incident occurred near Nexus Shantiniketan Mall, creating panic among commuters and raising fresh concerns over rising instances of aggressive driving and violence on city roads.

The accused has been identified as Sayed Arbaz Khan, a resident of RT Nagar, who is employed at a fish shop. He was arrested on Sunday by the Kadugodi police following a detailed investigation based on dashcam footage and vehicle registration details.

Incident caught on dashcam

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the incident took place on Friday when the complainant and his family were travelling in a car in the Whitefield area. Khan, who was riding a two-wheeler, allegedly blocked the car following a traffic-related argument.

Police said the accused abused the car driver, got down from his scooter, and brandished a dagger, threatening the occupants of the vehicle before fleeing the scene. The sudden escalation of the argument into a violent confrontation left the family traumatised.

Dashcam footage from the complainant’s car clearly showed the accused stepping off his scooter after a brief altercation and pulling out a sharp weapon in a threatening manner. The footage later became a crucial piece of evidence in identifying and tracing the accused.

Swift police action leads to arrest

Based on the complaint and the video evidence, the Kadugodi police registered a case and launched an investigation. Officials said the registration number of the scooter was clearly visible in the dashcam footage.

“Using the registration details captured in the dashcam video, we traced the vehicle owner and confirmed that it belonged to the accused,” a senior police officer said. The scooter was registered in Khan’s name, making it easier for investigators to locate him.

After tracking his movements, the police arrested Khan and seized the weapon allegedly used during the incident. He was later produced before a magistrate for further legal proceedings.

Charges invoked under BNS and Arms Act

The police have booked the accused under relevant provisions of the Arms Act for possessing and using a dangerous weapon in a public place. He has also been charged under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 126 (wrongful restraint), Section 351 (criminal intimidation), and Section 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace).

Officials said these sections were invoked considering the seriousness of the threat posed to the victims and the potential risk to public safety.

Accused’s criminal background

During preliminary verification, the police found that Khan has a criminal history. According to officials, four cases were previously registered against him in Bengaluru. These include two cases related to causing injury, one case of conspiracy to commit dacoity, and another case involving bike theft.

Police said his past record will be taken into account during further investigation and while opposing bail, if sought. “This is not a first-time offence. His criminal antecedents show a pattern of violent and unlawful behaviour,” an officer said.

Rising concern over road rage incidents

The incident has once again drawn attention to the growing problem of road rage in Bengaluru. Traffic police officials and road safety experts have observed a sharp rise in aggressive behaviour among motorists, often triggered by minor traffic disputes.

Experts say congestion, stress, lack of patience, and poor civic sense contribute to such incidents. “What starts as a small argument can quickly escalate into violence, as seen in this case. Carrying weapons and threatening families is extremely dangerous,” said a road safety campaigner.

Police officials have urged motorists to avoid engaging with aggressive drivers and to immediately report such incidents rather than retaliating. They also stressed the importance of installing dashcams, which have increasingly proved useful in identifying offenders.

Police appeal to the public

The Bengaluru police have appealed to citizens to remain calm while driving and to refrain from confrontations on the road. “If faced with an aggressive individual, prioritise your safety, avoid arguments, and report the matter to the police with as much evidence as possible,” an officer said.

They also warned that strict action would be taken against those who resort to violence, intimidation, or the use of weapons during road rage incidents.

Conclusion

The arrest of Sayed Arbaz Khan underscores the role of technology, particularly dashcam footage, in helping law enforcement swiftly identify and apprehend offenders. While the police action has brought some relief to the affected family, the incident highlights the urgent need for greater awareness, stricter enforcement, and behavioural change to curb the growing menace of road rage on Bengaluru’s busy streets.
