Bengaluru: Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa informed on Friday, that the state government will, in the next three days, take a decision on criminalising religious conversion for marriage.
The development comes after the issue was discussed at the BJP’s executive committee meeting in Mangaluru on Thursday. Several BJP leaders have also brought up the issue independently in the run up to the meeting.
Speaking to the media on Friday, BSY said that he wants to take a decision on the matter as soon as possible. “I have been holding discussions regarding the issue with other leaders and in the next two to three days, we will decide what to do,” he said.
To a query about why the government is considering such a legislation, BSY responded saying that love jihad is the reason. He added that legal experts will be consulted before the decision is made.
It can be noted that there is no definition for the term “love jihad” under the country’s current laws, a fact that has been acknowledged by the BJP government in Parliament. This is an alleged conspiracy that has been raised particularly by right-wing groups in India.
