In a recent statement, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar unveiled a comprehensive five-point programme to address infrastructural challenges in Bengaluru. The programme focuses on key areas including drinking water, pothole filling, widening the property tax net, property tax collection, and clearance of encroachments on water resources.

Key Highlights:

  • Drinking Water: BBMP instructed to repair dysfunctional drinking water units and conduct quality tests.
  • Encroachment Clearance: Government directed to clear encroachments on ‘Rajakaluve’ as per court orders.
  • Pothole Filling: BBMP tasked with filling up over 5,000 potholes within the next 15 days.
  • Property Tax Net Widening: Initiative to widen the property tax net and enhance tax collection.
  • Lake Encroachment: Survey to be conducted to identify encroachments on 116 out of 182 lakes, with plans for clearance.

Encroachment and Pothole Solutions:

  • Identified 2,626 encroachments, cleared 556 by 2022-23, with 1,136 new encroachments identified.
  • BMTF instructed to clear new encroachments, while BBMP to map and clear encroaching properties on lakes.
  • BWSSB assigned responsibility for filling lakes with treated water to recharge groundwater.

Citizen Engagement:

  • Launch of an app allowing citizens to report potholes by uploading photos and locations.
