Shivakumarhttps://x.com/DKShivakumar on Friday met Rajnath Singh in New Delhi and discussed building height restrictions imposed around defence airports in Bengaluru.

Shivakumar, who also serves as Bengaluru Development Minister, expressed concern over the impact of these restrictions on urban growth in several parts of the city.

Balanced solution sought

According to a statement from his office, the Deputy Chief Minister urged the Union Defence Minister to adopt a balanced approach that protects aviation safety while also supporting Bengaluru’s expansion needs.

He submitted a formal letter and referred to earlier representations sent by the Government of Karnataka to the Centre on the same issue.

HAL airport area under focus

In his letter, Shivakumar pointed to what he described as excessive restrictions while granting no-objection certificates for construction within a 20-km range of defence airports.

He noted that HAL Airport is located in the core part of Bengaluru, where demand for development remains high. Additional limits, he said, are slowing projects in surrounding areas.

Four airports in Bengaluru

At present, Bengaluru has four operational airports and airbases, including the Yelahanka Air Force Station. Authorities must obtain NOCs from relevant airport agencies before granting construction approvals.

The Greater Bengaluru Authority has reportedly informed the state government about stricter norms being applied in recent clearances.

Need for faster clearances

Meetings were earlier held with airport representatives to resolve pending concerns and speed up approvals. Defence authorities reportedly cited existing rules that permit additional restrictions based on safety calculations.
