Egg traders in the city are facing mounting losses as prices have dropped sharply amid falling demand, export disruptions and reduced hotel activity during the Ramzan period.

Sharp fall in prices hits traders

According to traders, the price of an egg in Bengaluru has declined from ₹7.05 to ₹4.80 in recent days. The sudden drop has created financial strain across the supply chain, affecting traders, poultry farmers and transporters.

With supply remaining steady and demand weakening, many in the trade say they are struggling to sustain their businesses under current conditions.

Export slowdown worsens situation

One of the key reasons cited for the price crash is the decline in exports. Traders say that with reduced overseas demand, a large quantity of eggs is now being diverted to the local market.

This surplus, combined with limited buying activity, has led to a further fall in prices, pushing many traders into losses.

Hotel closures reduce bulk demand

The crisis has been compounded by disruptions in the hospitality sector. Several hotels have either scaled down operations or temporarily shut kitchens due to LPG supply issues.

Traders noted that hotels are among the largest bulk consumers of eggs. With reduced kitchen activity, demand has fallen significantly, directly impacting sales volumes.

Ramzan impacts consumption patterns

In addition to market and supply issues, the ongoing Ramzan period has also influenced consumption trends. Bulk purchases by restaurants and food outlets have declined, further weakening demand.

This seasonal shift, combined with other challenges, has intensified the crisis faced by those in the egg trade.

Trade hit by nearly 50 percent

Industry sources estimate that the egg business in Bengaluru has been impacted by nearly 50 percent due to the combined effect of export decline, hospitality slowdown, gas supply issues and changing consumption patterns.

The price fall has increased financial pressure on traders and others involved in the supply chain, leaving many uncertain about recovery in the coming weeks.
