A group of paying guest (PG) residents in Bengaluru woke up to an unpleasant surprise after thieves allegedly entered their accommodation during the night and stole eight mobile phones.

The incident was reported at Sai Aradhya Luxury PG for Gents on Kudlu Main Road in Hosapalya. A complaint was filed by Darshan, 27, a cab driver and resident of the PG.

Residents discover phones missing

According to the complaint, Darshan returned to the PG at around 11 pm on May 28 and placed his two mobile phones on charge before going to sleep. Several other residents had similarly left their phones charging in their rooms overnight.

When Darshan woke up at around 6 am the next morning, he found both his phones missing. Upon checking with other inmates, it emerged that six more phones had also been stolen from different rooms.

CCTV footage captures suspects

Following the complaint, Bandepalya police registered a case under Section 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with theft in a dwelling house and similar premises.

Police examined CCTV footage from the building and reportedly identified two suspects entering the PG and leaving after committing the theft.

Lack of security raises concerns

Investigators found that the PG did not have a security guard on duty at the time of the incident. It was also revealed that several residents had left their room doors unlocked while sleeping, making it easier for the thieves to access the premises.

Police have launched an investigation and are working to trace the suspects using CCTV footage and other available evidence.

The incident has raised concerns about security measures in paying guest accommodations, particularly in areas with a large student and working-professional population.
