Bengaluru: Heavy rainfall in the city took a concerning turn after an electric pole in a residential area of Indiranagar was seen catching fire during a downpour, creating panic and raising fresh concerns over electrical safety during the monsoon season. A video of the incident, which surfaced on social media, quickly gained attention and triggered discussions regarding ageing electrical infrastructure and public safety risks.

The incident came to light after a resident captured visuals showing flames and sparks emerging from an electric pole despite heavy rain in the area.

Viral video captures alarming scene

The video was shared on social media platform X by Niket Raj Dwivedi, who posted footage of the incident from what appeared to be a residential locality in Indiranagar.

While sharing the clip online, he wrote that heavy rains had once again exposed issues involving electrical wires in the area.

In the footage, the camera focuses on an electric pole positioned across from the residential building while rain continued to lash the locality.

Despite the heavy downpour, flames could be seen emerging from a section of the pole, while bright sparks repeatedly burst from the electrical lines.

The visuals also showed sparks scattering around the area, creating a potentially hazardous situation in the rain-soaked surroundings.

Safety concerns raised online

The combination of rainwater, electrical wiring and visible flames prompted concern among social media users after the video began circulating online.

Several individuals highlighted possible risks associated with ageing electrical infrastructure and poor maintenance of overhead wiring systems.

Users also pointed out that exposed wires and damaged insulation can become particularly dangerous during periods of heavy rainfall.

Some individuals shared experiences involving electrical issues in residential areas and stressed the need for timely inspection of overhead power infrastructure.

Others stated that dangling wires and damaged electrical lines during the monsoon season could create serious risks for pedestrians and nearby residents.

Calls grow for infrastructure improvements

A section of social media users also renewed demands for underground electrical cable systems as an alternative to overhead lines.

According to comments posted online, overhead electrical systems may become increasingly vulnerable during heavy rains and storms, particularly when ageing infrastructure remains exposed to weather conditions.

Supporters of underground systems argued that such infrastructure could help reduce disruptions and improve safety during extreme weather events.

However, officials have not publicly commented on the specific incident mentioned in the video.

Monsoon often exposes civic challenges

The incident occurred as Bengaluru continued witnessing heavy rainfall across several parts of the city in recent days.

Periods of intense rain frequently expose infrastructure-related concerns including waterlogging, damaged roads, power disruptions and electrical safety hazards.

Experts have often stressed the importance of regular maintenance and preventive inspection of electrical infrastructure, particularly before and during the monsoon period.

The viral footage has once again brought attention to concerns regarding urban infrastructure and public safety measures during adverse weather conditions.
