Bengaluru: Vaijnath Patil, former state minister, passed away at a private hospital here in the wee hours of Saturday, November 2. He was 81 years old.

ANI reports that the former minister died after suffering from a prolonged illness. He was receiving treatment at Fortis Hospital in Bengaluru. Sources close to the family have informed that his last rites will be held in Chincholi of the Kalaburagi district on Sunday.

Patil is survived by his wife, two daughters and three sons including former chairperson of MSIL Dr Vikram Patil and Zilla Panchayat member Gautam Patil.

A social worker and politician from Kalaburgi, Vaijanath Sangappa Patil was born on July 29, 1938 to an agricultural family in the Hakyala village of the Aurad taluk, Bidar district.

He was conferred with an honorary doctorate by the Gulbarga University for his service to society.

During his political career, Patil served as Kalaburgi MLA from 1984 to 1990 and Chincholi MLA twice, from 1994 to 1999 and again from 2004 to 2008. He also served as horticulture minister in 1984 in the then Chief Minister Ramakrishna Hegde’s cabinet. He later held the portfolio of Urban Development department under JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda’s cabinet in 1994.

As president of the Hyderabad-Karnataka Horata Samithi, he was passionately and intimately involved in the decades-long struggle by the backward region of Kalyana Karnataka (North-East) for special status under Article 371 of the Constitution. He was at the forefront of several agitations.

His ideological stand was such that he would openly point out any injustice to the region, once even resigning from his ministerial post citing the government’s cavalier attitude towards the region.
