Bengaluru: Police in Bengaluru have arrested a father-son duo for allegedly carrying out a high-value theft at a computer shop in HBR Layout, recovering stolen goods and cash worth around ₹80 lakh.
The accused have been identified as 21-year-old Hemanth M and his 45-year-old father Manjunath, both residents of Nagawara.
Burqas used to avoid CCTV detection
According to police, the duo wore burqas during the crime to conceal their identity and evade detection on CCTV cameras. The unusual disguise initially made it difficult for investigators to identify the suspects.
However, sustained efforts by the Govindapura police led to their arrest within two days of the theft being reported.
Stolen items worth ₹80 lakh recovered
During the operation, police recovered a large quantity of stolen electronic components and cash, including:
- 444 RAM units
- 279 laptop SSDs
- ₹2.29 lakh in cash
The total value of the recovered items is estimated at around ₹80 lakh.
Officials said the swift recovery helped prevent the goods from being sold in the grey market.
Insider knowledge aided theft
Investigations revealed that Hemanth had previously worked as a laptop technician at the same shop for about six months. He was familiar with the inventory and layout of the store.
Police said he had quit his job following a dispute with the shop owner over salary issues. He allegedly used his knowledge of the premises to plan the theft.
On March 13, the duo reportedly broke open the shop shutter and stole high-value components, particularly RAM and SSD storage devices, which are in high demand and easy to resell.
Father assisted in execution
During interrogation, Manjunath is said to have confessed to assisting his son in executing the crime. Police stated that he helped procure a duplicate key to access the shop and supported the escape after the theft.
Manjunath runs a provision store, while Hemanth works as a technician, officials added.
Accused traced through CCTV and local leads
Based on a complaint filed by the shop owner, police launched an investigation and analysed CCTV footage from the area.
Despite the disguise, officers were able to gather crucial leads from surveillance footage and local intelligence, which ultimately led to the identification and arrest of the accused.
Conclusion
The case highlights how insider knowledge can be misused in planning crimes, while also underlining the role of prompt police action and surveillance systems in solving such cases quickly. Authorities have reiterated that strict action will be taken against those involved in theft and related offences.
