Bengaluru: In a horrifying incident, a 34-year-old woman from Kolkata was allegedly gang-raped and robbed by a group of men who broke into her rented house in Madanayakanahalli, northwest Bengaluru, shortly after midnight on Tuesday.

According to the police, the woman, who works at a local beauty parlour, was asleep with her four-year-old son when the four men stormed into her home around 12:15 am. The assailants threatened her, took turns to assault her, and fled the scene with ₹26,000 in cash and valuables.

Child alerts police after assault

Police said the incident came to light when the woman’s son dialled the emergency helpline 112, leading to the swift arrival of Madanayakanahalli police officers at the scene.

The survivor was taken to a government hospital for medical examination and counselling. Preliminary reports indicate that the woman had been living with a colleague, who was away during the incident.

Police launch swift operation

Following the complaint, three special teams from the Bengaluru District Police were formed to track down the culprits. CCTV footage from the locality helped police identify the suspects.

“Within hours of the crime being reported, we apprehended the main accused — a lab technician — along with his driver and two other accomplices,” said a senior police officer. “Another suspect is currently absconding, and efforts are underway to locate him.”

Investigation and further action

Police sources confirmed that the accused will face charges under Sections 376D (gang rape) and 392 (robbery) of the Indian Penal Code. Officials said they are also examining whether the accused were involved in other similar offences reported in the area.

The case has been transferred to the Women and Child Protection Unit for continued investigation and victim support.

Community reaction and safety concerns

The incident has sparked public outrage, with local women’s rights groups calling for stronger night patrolling and faster judicial action in sexual assault cases. The Bengaluru Police Commissioner’s office said night surveillance has been intensified in the Madanayakanahalli–Gangondanahalli belt, an area with increasing cases of break-ins and thefts.

Police have urged citizens to report suspicious movement in their neighbourhoods and to make use of emergency helplines for immediate assistance.

Survivor receives medical and legal support

Authorities confirmed that the survivor is receiving necessary medical treatment and trauma counselling. The Karnataka State Commission for Women has taken cognisance of the case and sought a report from the district police.

Officials assured that the accused would be produced before court after detailed interrogation, and the survivor’s testimony would be recorded under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Conclusion

The shocking case underscores persistent gaps in urban safety and women’s security, even in rapidly developing areas of Bengaluru. Law enforcement agencies have vowed to pursue strict legal action to ensure justice for the survivor and restore public confidence.
