After decades in Karnataka politics, Congress leader D.K. Shivakumar is finally set to achieve the goal he reportedly vowed to pursue while lodged in Delhi’s Tihar Jail in 2019 — becoming the Chief Minister of Karnataka.
As the Congress Legislature Party formally endorsed him as the successor to Siddaramaiah, Shivakumar’s long political journey reached its most significant milestone yet.
A vow born in adversity
Following his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case in 2019, Shivakumar spent 50 days in Tihar Jail. When he emerged, sporting a distinctive beard, close associates revealed that he had pledged not to shave until he became Chief Minister.
The beard soon became a symbol of political resilience and determination, accompanying him through some of the most challenging years of his career.
From local organiser to political powerhouse
Shivakumar’s political instincts were shaped early through local community interactions and student leadership. He first entered electoral politics in 1985 by contesting against former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda in Sathanur.
Though he lost that election, it marked the beginning of a rivalry that would shape Vokkaliga politics for decades.
Over the years, Shivakumar transformed Kanakapura into a strong Congress bastion, building an extensive political network through educational institutions, cooperatives and grassroots engagement.
Congress troubleshooter
National prominence came when the Congress leadership repeatedly entrusted him with safeguarding legislators during political crises.
His role in protecting Congress MLAs during the 2017 Rajya Sabha election, which helped senior leader Ahmed Patel secure victory, earned him a reputation as one of the party’s most dependable strategists.
The success strengthened his standing with the Congress high command and cemented his image as a crisis manager.
Road to the top
Shivakumar played a pivotal role in reviving the Karnataka Congress through initiatives such as the Mekedatu Padayatra and by overseeing the party’s organisational efforts during the Bharat Jodo Yatra.
Although he missed out on the Chief Minister’s post after the Congress victory in 2023, he accepted the role of Deputy Chief Minister and focused on infrastructure and development projects, particularly in Bengaluru.
Now, after years of political battles, legal challenges and organisational work, Shivakumar is preparing to take oath as Karnataka’s next Chief Minister, marking the culmination of a journey defined by perseverance, political acumen and ambition.
